Summer Program: Duane Morris’ nationally recognized Summer Associate Program is designed to offer aspiring attorneys an impactful career experience and a realistic look at life as an associate at the firm. Our summer program balances interesting, real work assignments with robust training opportunities, mentorship, and enjoyable social and networking events to foster connections that will last throughout your career. Our summer associates are actively engaged in real matters of current importance to the firm, our clients, and the community. To gain exposure to our broad array of practices, summer associates are encouraged to work alongside lawyers in many offices and practice areas within the firm. Summer associates learn how our lawyers work together to address client concerns and how their own work product contributes to the representation. Our summer associates also have numerous opportunities to observe depositions, hearings, trials, client meetings, and other activities that provide meaningful learning experiences. A sampling of the work experiences of former summer associates includes: - Researching and drafting a memorandum on admissibility of photographs derived from concealed video surveillance equipment; - Attending client meetings and assisting in the preparation of the client’s application to the SEC for authorization to conduct an initial public offering; - Researching corporate voting dispute issues and attending public stockholder meetings during which the research results were applied; and - Assisting in preparation of briefs for the Third Circuit Court of Appeals and attending oral arguments. Throughout the summer, summer associates participate in a robust orientation and training program, designed to build theoretical and practical skills for legal practice. Featured topics include presentations by practice group leadership and courses on legal writing, negotiating, and taking depositions. In the deposition skills training, summer associates study the facts of a mock case and act as counsel, deposing a witness who is played by a firm attorney. A court reporter records the proceedings and provides summer associates with a written transcript of the deposition. As part of the mock negotiation program, summer associates attend a skills-based lecture, then work in teams to negotiate a deal. Summer associates also have the opportunity to review existing attorney work product and to learn how to adapt it to new situations and representations. Each summer associate is assigned individual senior and junior mentors, as well as a shared Summer Program Coordinator (SPC), who is an associate well-acquainted with the firm and the Summer Program. The SPC and mentors provide general and work-related guidance and help introduce the summer associates to other lawyers in the firm.

Summer associates are not assigned to a practice group and will have the opportunity to work with multiple groups across all offices during the Summer Program. At the conclusion of the program, summer associates are asked to rank their top practice areas of interest. Duane Morris makes an effort to take these rankings into account when determining placements for incoming entry level associates, although decisions regarding practice group placement are made in the sole discretion of the Firm, based on market conditions and needs of the Firm at the time of the associate's start date.
